THE FISHER HOUSE
In 2007, Compatriot Harold Lewis brought to the camp’s attention the Fisher House at Fort Gordon. According to Lewis, an army veteran and a very frequent volunteer, the Fisher House is a ‘home away from home’ for many families with loved ones in the Eisenhower Medical Center.
Guests at the Fisher House are served on a first come, first served basis. Their family member can be in active duty, a retiree, and from any branch of the military. Guests aren’t asked if they are poor and then rejected if they are not. The welcome mat is simply out, plain and simple.
The Fisher House receives no financial support from the army. It depends on the Fisher House Foundation and on donations made by others.
Strictly speaking, the Fisher House is not within the scope of our Sons of Confederate Veterans ‘charge’. Therefore, the camp voted to make all its support via canned foods and dry stuffs; it will not use camp funds. However, according to Compatriot Lewis, every little bit counts.
The Fisher House is “dedicated to our greatest national treasure…Our military service men and women and their loved ones.” Camp #1914 is very proud to support this great effort.
